Cycling Sisters recommendations for bike shorts

These are the Cycling Sisters recommendations so far for bike shorts:

My all time favorite bike shorts are made by Aero Tech.

I prefer the triathlon shorts because the pad is not thick and
you don't feel it between your legs. -Kathy (seconded by Kristina)

And...

My favorite biking shorts are the Terry Bella short:

The chamois is comfortable and the fabric is soft and feels very nice against your skin. It costs more than others, but you get what you pay for. -Sharon

(She ain't kidding. The Terrys are $90!!!)

More advice...

i'm a fan of pearl izumis. i bought one for a tour i did last summer
(along with a pair of cannondales and a pair of performance' s brand),
and they quickly became my favorites, so much that i bought another
pair during the trip! i'm not certain of the exact style, and i really
can't tell you anything more besides the fact that they cost around
$70 at performance.

(for the record, the cannondales were good, too, but i was
underwhelmed by the performance pair. it was their "century" short,
with a gel chamois that wasn't really comfortable after mile 60...plus
the shorts weigh, like, 4 pounds!!)

if you have time to spare, you can probably get better deals online.
BUT, definitely try on a pair in real life first!! you want to make
sure the size is right, and that you dig the cut, etc.

conventional wisdom recommends having two or three different pairs of
different shorts on tour, you know, to bring some variety to your
saddle sores! though there were two or three kids on my trip who wore
the same type of short everyday, and they did just fine.

you didn't ask, but i also recommend some type of chamois cream. i
used and highly recommend butt'r, but there are plenty of products out
there. (i do recommend against vasoline, though! it's cheap, but tough
to remove from clothes, especially on the road.)

and make sure your hands will be comfy, too! i really like gel bar
tape, and some types of bar tape come with gel pads you can put
underneath. or, if you have extra/reusable bar tape, you can
double-wrap. if your experience is anything like mine, your hands will
appreciate the added width, not to mention cushioning from road
vibrations! also, specialized makes the best gel gloves ever. i swear
by these. here's a link to a women's pair:

as of last year, johnny sprocket's carried the men's version, which
has red as an accent color instead of pink. that padding all over the
palm is MONEY, i am telling you.

touring is awesome, and i suspect you will have a fabulous time! best
of luck with your preparations, and i hope we'll see more updates,
even if it's just a link to your blog.

AND...

While they're expensive, I cannot say enough how wonderfully comfortable
and cusion-y the Assos chamois is. I have the lady roubaix knickers and
I find myself washing them almost daily so I can wear them on my long
rides. It's hands down the most comfortable cycling bottom I've ever
had. Assos has women's shorts and bib shorts with the same chamois.

Have fun on your trip!

Megan! Read this post from the Cycling Sisters - are you thinking what I'm thinking? shorts party!!
----
Get a pair of Breathable men/women undershorts (12.-), sow padding by hand ($2, 3.-). Cheap and comfortable. I have made 2 pair, I wear them under my pants for long trips (800 miles in 10 days, 600 miles in 9 days in Europe).

More thoughts on Terry shorts:

Jane says yes to Terry, but here is a caveat from Tamara...

I love Terry and they make a great product. However, the chamois on the
shorts and knickers I've gotten from them haven't stood up over time,
I'm sorry to say. But then, maybe they aren't meant to last more than a
year. Hmmm.
